What is Shared hosting?

With shared hosting one’s web site is placed on the same server as many other sites, ranging from a few to hundreds. Typically all domains share a common pool of server resources, such as the RAM and the CPU. As cost is extremely low most websites with moderate traffic levels running standard software are hosted on this type of server. Shared hosting is also widely accepted as the entry level option as it requires minimum technical knowledge.

A web server must support hundreds perhaps thousands of sites simultaneously, while creating a well-balanced server environment. Most Linux servers in today's shared hosting environment run Apache web servers. A single site potentially can consume all CPU, IO, Memory resources or Apache processes and this may bring the server to a complete grinding halt.

The shared hosting environment sets limits, designed or rather configured to make sure that no single web site can bring down the web server which will affect everyone else.

In our shared environment, we have an in-house system that makes sure that no matter what any customer does, it will never affect other customers on the machine. This system controls resources being used by all processes for any single account. This eliminates the noisy, bad neighbor effect, improves our server's stability, and gives every webmaster on the server real bang for his/her bucks.

When limits are reached, the website will become slower. Usually limits are reached when a website is badly optimized for speed. Sites that use a database to store data and a CMS (content management system) like Joomla, Wordpress, Drupal, etc. can easily reach the limits. Here are a few steps to make your website run fast and smooth, and to stay away from the limits:

Optimize database queries;
Combine css and js files and get rid of duplicate css and js files/libraries;
Minify css, js, html files;
Optimize all images;
Cache files on the server;
Gzip (compress) connections between the server and the browser
Use a CDN (content distribution network) service;
Use browser caching.

You can also upgrade to a bigger and more robust package. You should consider this if you have a really big website with hundreds of thousands database entries and many thousand visits per day.

What is a VPS?

VPS hosting is a Virtual Private Server, and is a virtualized server. A VPS hosting environment mimics a dedicated server within a shared hosting environment. The technology behind VPS hosting is similar to that of VMware or Virtual Box. These programs allow you to run several virtualized operating systems on one machine. For example, your desktop may be running Windows 7, but you can also run other operating systems such as Windows XP or Linux without needing to restart your computer.

The VPS hosting environments function in the same manner. While we have one physical server, we can run several different virtualized operating systems on that one server. Each virtualized operating system acts as if it was a dedicated server. This allows you to have all of the benefits of a dedicated server at a fraction of the cost.

The VPS environment we offer uses Parallels Virtuozzo Containers in order to virtualize the Operating System. Each VPS hosting environment is referred to as a container, and the physical server each container is provisioned to is referred to as a node.

What does VPS provide:

Dedicated Resources: On a VPS you have dedicated amounts of RAM available to you at any time. Unlike shared hosting, there is no one else on your server that can use utilize all the RAM when you need it most!
Control: If you're installing server applications that require a system restart, you can do so at any time. Even though technically you share a server with other VPS servers, your VPS server can be restarted without affecting anyone else.
Customization: With a VPS server, you have your own Operating System. This also means that you have your own instances of all server applications such as Apache, PHP, and MySQL. If you need to have any of these services customized, you can make changes to suit the server to your needs.

What is a Dedicated server?

A Dedicated server provides full control and customization of your server available resources, such us CPU and RAM.

VPS vs Dedicated - which one is right for me?

VPS hosting gives you the affordability of shared hosting while at the same time giving you more power and control like a dedicated server. If you are considering a dedicated server and are unsure if it is right for you, perhaps you will need to get VPS hosting.
